Established in 1863 in Milan, north of Italy, and now counting approximately 40,000 enrolled students, Politecnico di Milano is the largest and most renowned Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design school in Italy. Politecnico di Milano has always fostered quality and innovation in teaching and research, cultivating a prolific relationship with the economic and manufacturing worlds through experimental research and technology transfer. As a result, Politecnico di Milano is now ranked as one of the most outstanding European universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design, and in many disciplines is regarded as a leading research institution worldwide. Politecnico is in fact involved in many research and training projects with the best qualified European universities, as well as expanding to other countries: from North America to South East Asia. Today Politecnico di Milano is organised in 16 departments and a network of 9 Schools of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design spread over 7 campuses over the Lombardy region with a central administration and management. The 9 schools are devoted to education whereas the 16 departments are devoted to research.
The Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Aerospaziali (Aerospace Science and Technology Department, PoliMI-DAER) conducts research in a wide range of topics within aerospace sciences, including fixed-wing, rotorcraft, wind energy and space related applications. The Department has 42 faculty members, and supervises Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. courses in Aerospace, Aeronautical and Space Engineering. PoliMI-DAER has state-of-the-art computational as well as experimental facilities, which include, among others, laboratories for structural dynamics, composite materials, crash, real-time simulation, material characterization, combustion and aerodynamics, with the largest wind tunnel in Italy. The Department has a specific focus area on the development of advanced numerical modelling tools for simulation applied to aerospace science problems. PoliMI-DAER boasts long-standing collaborations with world-class aeronautical, space and wind energy companies and the participation/leadership in more than fifty FP5, FP6, FP7, Clean Sky 1 & 2, and H2020 EU-funded projects on aerospace and wind energy technologies and applications.
